Sony MDRXB700
$249.00
Released January, 2009
The Pros:Comfortable oversized pads. Affordable for a top-of-the-line option. Closed design will provide powerful bass and isolation from outside noise.
The Cons:Poor warranty (typical of Sony). Mini-stereo plug - not intended for use with higher end 'audiophile' equipment. Unattractive.
The Sony MDRXB700 is a lightweight XB series headphone with ultra-thick pressure-relieving 50mm (thickness) cushions for unbeatable comfort. The fifth of five models in the Sony XB series, the MDRXB700 is an upgrade from the MDRXB500 in that it offers larger cushions (50mm versus 45mm), a superior frequency (3 – 28,000Hz versus 4 – 24,000Hz), an improved sensitivity (106dB versus 104dB), and a greatly enhanced power handling of 3000mW (versus 1500 mW).

In all other ways, however, the MDRXB700 is practically a duplicate of its downgraded peer. For instance, the MDRXB700 is also outfitted with a newly developed long stroke diaphragm and a tightly sealed acoustic design cited for accurately reproducing ultra-low frequency sounds and deep, rich bass tones suitable for dance and hip hop music. In addition, the MDRXB700 offers an impedance of 24 ohms (versus 40 ohms), and comes equipped with an L-shaped stereo mini-plug and a TPC Y-Shaped card. The Sony MDRXB700 retails for $249.00 (versus $199.00) and comes with a 90 day limited warranty.
